As an interior designer, I often find myself in the exciting position of helping clients transform their living spaces into unique, functional, and inspiring environments. While classic designs have their timeless appeal, pushing the boundaries with bold choices can lead to spaces that are truly exceptional and reflective of the client's personality and lifestyle. In this blog post, I'll explore the power of embracing bold choices in interior design and share some tips on how to do so effectively.
Before embarking on any bold design journey, it's crucial to understand your vision, preferences, and the functionality you require from the space. A deep understanding of your personality, tastes, and needs will guide you in making choices that resonate while pushing design boundaries. A great way to incorporate bold design choices is by selecting a focal point within a room. It could be a striking piece of furniture, a statement artwork, a unique lighting fixture, or even an accent wall. A bold focal point can set the tone for the entire space and create a sense of drama and excitement.
Color is a powerful tool in interior design. Don't be afraid to experiment with vibrant, unexpected color choices. Whether it's an accent wall in a deep jewel tone, bold and contrasting color combinations, or daring use of wallpaper, a vivid color palette can instantly transform a space. But in all honestly, if you're going to do an accent wall, go all of the way and paint the entire room! It's only paint, wink! Go big or go home, right? Another way to be bold is incorporating bold patterns and textures can add depth and character to a room. Mix and match different patterns and textures in your design, from geometric rugs to textured wallpaper, to create visual interest and intrigue. Not only can this be bold for some people, it should be a requirement for all people. Textures and patterns bring depth and character to the space. If everything some solid and smooth, do you know how boring that would be long term? Now don't get me wrong. I love an all white room that is clean and simple, but even those types of spaces have texture and pattern. The ivory rug will usually have a pattern in it, same shade, but will have dimension. Most of the time people add greenery, that's a perfect way to add dimension and character. It is life!
Investing in statement furniture pieces or unique accessories can be a game-changer in interior design. Boldly designed chairs, coffee tables, or lighting fixtures can elevate the entire room and act as conversation starters. Vintage and antiques are definitely popular right now and will probably continue to be. They don't make them like they used to! Go out and find yourself something funky and unique instead of buying from a big box store. You'll appreciate it so much more knowing no one else has that piece. Sometimes, pushing design boundaries means going beyond the comfort zone. Be willing to explore unconventional ideas, materials, and layouts. It's through these leaps of creativity that you can achieve truly innovative and inspiring designs. Like I mentioned with the paint, it's only paint, well, trying new layouts isn't permanent! Live with it for a few weeks and see how it feels!
Another aspect is lighting, it can make or break a space. Consider bold lighting choices, such as oversized chandeliers, sculptural pendants, or even neon lighting. The right lighting not only illuminates the space but also enhances the design's impact. You want to have multiple lighting sources in each room. Table lamps, chandeliers, task lamps, floor lamps, and don't forget, sconces.
While embracing bold design choices is exciting, maintaining balance is essential. A room that's too overwhelming can lose its charm. Strike a balance by incorporating bold elements while ensuring they coexist harmoniously with more understated elements. Never compromise on functionality when making bold design choices. A beautifully designed space should not only look good but also serve its intended purpose. Be mindful of traffic flow, usability, and comfort. Design trends and personal preferences change over time. Embrace change and be open to redesigning spaces to keep them fresh and innovative. A bold design today can be an inspiring classic tomorrow.
